Head of the Class: Exclusive Savings Just for Teachers

Head of the Class: Exclusive Savings Just for Teachers
Jacquelyn

Helping the nation’s youth reach their full potential is no small task, which is why our teachers deserve a little love. America’s clothing retailers agree, with a host of ways they invite educators to save cash while looking sharp. Here are a few tips on finding the best deals for great classroom styles.

Shop In-StoreTeacher discount

Many clothing retailers offer discounts on full-price merchandise for teachers when they show an educator ID or pay stub in-store. Three of our favorites offer a significant savings of 15% off when a valid school ID is shown at checkout: The Limited, Banana Republic, and J. Crew. Since few people know about this special way to save, you may occasionally encounter a confused clerk. Call ahead to make sure those on the job are honoring these offers.

Choose a Teacher-Loving Retailer

When it comes to treating teachers right, some clothing retailers earn a true A+. Ann Taylor LOFT tops our list with an offer of 15% off for educators on in-store purchases, as well as a range of additional perks you get by signing up for their special teacher’s mailing list. Get the scoop on exclusive contests and coupons, seasonal style guides and teacher appreciation nights. You’ll even gain access to LOFT’s $50,000 Best in Class grant program, which helps fund creative, innovative classroom programs.

Wait for May

Why May? Because the second week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week, and a host of stores like to join the party. In past years, we’ve seen discounts of up to 30% off at retailers such as Old Navy, Coldwater Creek, and New York and company. Discounts are generally in-store only. Sign up for the mailing lists at your favorite retailers to stay in the loop on these special seasonal offers.

Get a Smart IDteacher ID

You might remember the International Student ID from your college backpacking days. Well, the same organization also offers an internationally-recognized card for teachers, one that comes with access to a fun array of discounts. Offers include 10% off at Macy’s or Bloomingdales, or $5 off $50 purchases plus free shipping at Target.com. That’s in addition to the card’s more traditional benefits of basic travel insurance, a special 24-hour travel helpline, and discounts on hotels and hostels.

Use Your Union

Are you a member of the National Educators’ Association? NEA teachers can take advantage of the union’s fantastic Click and Save program. This earns you great discounts at top retailers, including 30% off at The Gap, 10% off a $50 or more purchase at Target, or 15% off at Kohl’s. You’ll also rack up WOWPoints for every purchase you make. Retailers offer anywhere from 1 to 15 WOWPoints for every dollar you spend. Earn 100 points, and redeem them for $1 of purchasing power through the Click and Save site, helping you save even more cash when you shop.

With all these ways for teachers to save, there’s no reason for them to pay full price when it comes time to restock their wardrobes.
