Beloved by everyone from Presidents to preschoolers, Jelly Belly’s iconic candy brand had its start back in 1869, when Gustav Goelitz opened a family candy business in Belleville, Illinois. Although best known today for its jelly beans, over the years, the company has been beloved for its candy corn, royal buttercreams, mint wafers, tangerine slices and spice drops. The mini jellybeans were revolutionized in 1965 with a flavor-infused center. In 1976, the company began experimenting with a range of flavors for its Jelly Belly beans, and expanded to include 40 flavors by the 1980s, when 2.5 tons of jellybeans were shipped to Washington, D.C. for Ronald Reagan’s presidential inauguration. In 1989, the company introduced “buttered popcorn,” the first savory flavor. In 2000, a line of Harry Potter Bertie Bott’s Beans included flavors like bacon, dirt and spinach.
