National Hobby Month Deals and Steals

National Hobby Month Deals and Steals
Michelle Moross

Did you know January is National Hobby Month? Don't feel bad, I didn't either until recently. It makes sense though; if the traditional New Year's resolutions of weight loss and the like aren't up your alley, a new year marks a good point at which to take up a new hobby or find a creative outlet. I, for one, have decided that this is the month I stop haphazardly blowing into my saxophone and instead take real lessons. But the hardest part of starting a new hobby might be picking what it is you want to do — here are five suggestions and ways to start your new hobby for less.

Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

Has the music bug bit you too? If you're thinking of taking up an instrument, check out Guitar Center. On top of guitars and bass, they also have drums, keyboard, DJ equipment and more. This Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar is a good starter guitar; since it's acoustic it doesn't require an amp, and even better, it's only $49.99. If you have your eye on another instrument, use coupon code JAN10 this month to take 10% off items priced at $99 or more.

Knitting Supplies at Knitpicks

Knitting and crochet aren't just for old ladies anymore, in fact they've nearly shed all of that old-fashioned stigma as needle arts become more and more popular and stylish. KnitPicks is a great and affordable place to stock up on supplies for knitting and crochet. They have a huge selection of yarn in all sorts of colors, fibers, and weights, and to make it easy they let you know right on each product page how much comparable yarns will cost you in other shops. For example, the Imagination Hand Painted Sock Yarn (pictured) is only $6.79 a hank, while similar products will cost you about $10 elsewhere. They also have tons of yarn on sale, plus now through February 19 they're offering 40% off all books.

Singer 2277

Another creative hobby to take up is sewing. If you're starting from scratch and don't have a machine of your own, check out the Singer 2277 Tradition Sewing Machine from Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts. It's an easy machine that's great for beginner sewers, plus it's lightweight should you need to take it to class. Usually $129.99, it's currently $99.99 on sale. See something else you want? Coupon code AE116 will get you 40% off any full priced item at Jo-Ann now through February 16.

Canon PowerShot SX500 IS Digital Camera

Camera phones are everywhere these days, but if you're thinking of honing your photography skills, a legitimate digital camera is where it's at. The Canon PowerShot SX500 IS Digital Camera is a good place to start; while it doesn't have the full capabilities that a DSLR would, it comes with a 16 Megapixel sensor that yields crisp photos and video, plus a wide angle lens and hefty zooming capabilities. Also unlike a DSLR, it's pretty affordable; it's currently on sale for $249 with free shipping at Abe's of Maine.

Books at Alibris

Looking for an inexpensive hobby that doesn't require a lot of set-up and equipment? Reading is a relaxing hobby that will suit almost anyone. Check out Alibris for tons of new and used books at great prices. For somewhere to start, check out books that were the basis for two of this season's big movies, Les Miserables and The Great Gatsby. They're both classics, plus they're only 99 cents a pop! There are lots of discounts currently going on; check out our full set of Alibris coupons to see which works best for your order.

How about you? Are you taking up a new hobby this month?
