Summer is looming with its bathing suits, bare arms and short skirts. Chances are, you’ve already checked out the free and cheap workouts I’ve shared, but if you happen to have some extra money to spend on getting your beach body on, here are some shape-up splurges. Many of these classes have specific studios dedicated to them, but if you can find a gym that offers some of these classes, sign up! They’re all worth taking.

Zumba

If you’re a cardio fiend who’s looking for something beyond the elliptical this summer, find yourself a Zumba class. This dance cardio workout is easy enough to pick up on if you’re not very blessed in the rhythm department, but the fast beat and quick steps will have you breaking a sweat before you know it. Zumba classes can be found in dance studios, at a local sports club or even your YMCA, so the cost will vary.

The Bar Method

A ballerina and a pilates instructor walk into a bar… Ok, so that’s not how this workout got started, but it might as well be. The Bar Method focuses on developing, strengthening and elongating isolated muscles through a series of smaller movements more commonly found in pilates. The incorporation of a ballet barre assists with moves that challenge ones balance, and some ballet-inspired moves are also incorporated. This is a great class for those looking to tighten and tone, as opposed to those seeking out weight loss. The bar method costs around $20 a class, but packages are available.

SPX Pilates

If a Pilates based workout is something you enjoy, but you’re looking to push it to the next level, SPX Pilates may be the way to go for you. This Pilates based workout incorporates circuit training, to achieve greater muscle tone and development faster. You’ll use a Proformer or a Megaformer  which can look scary at first but the results are amazing once you get the hang of it.  Class prices range per studio and start at $18 at The Studio MDR.  Packages are also available for a discount at most Pilates studios.

TRX Suspension Training

TRX takes the very basic principal of exercises that use your body weight for resistance and takes it to the next level. The acronym stands for Total Resistance Exercise, and the only piece of equipment used are TRX bands – essentially a long, adjustable band with handles at either end. You’ll do basic exercises like push ups, rows, and planks, but with your arms or legs in the TRX bands, it’s an amazing core workout and does wonders for muscle definition. TRX classes usually run about $25 a class with discounted packages for multiple classes.

Independent TRX studios are popping up all over, but you can also find TRX classes at Crunch Gyms across the country. To find a Crunch near you, click here.

Trapeze Classes and other Fun

If suspension classes on the ground are too tame for you, try taking to the skies. Trapeze classes are a fun way to get a serious core and upper body workout. You’ll get a thrill flying through the air, but you’ll know you had a serious workout when it’s hard to raise your hands above your head the next day! Trapeze classes can be spendy at $40 or more, but if you keep an eye out for specials or Groupons you can sometimes snag them around $20. Along the same line as trapeze classes, there are a variety of Urban Playground gyms that are popping up, offering classes in tumbling, parkour, and even hula hooping. Moving your body in a new and interesting way will activate muscle groups different from what you'd engage during a typical weight lifting session, so even though it might seem like play, you're getting a great workout.

Personal Trainer

If you've got the cash and want results, the best way to achieve your goals is to hire someone who  knows his/her stuff. Personal trainers can help you target a trouble area, revamp your diet and find your fit self with step by step instructions. They don't come cheap, but there's nothing to get you to push through that last set of crunches like someone right next to you talking you through it. Personal training sessions can run anywhere from $50 - $150 an hour depending on the trainer and their certification.

With these effective options, hopefully you'll find a way to get fit and healthy this season, no matter the budget you're working with. Are there any killer workouts you think I've overlooked? What would you splurge on if you had an unlimited fitness budget?
