Thirty years ago, teenage girls the world over were captivated by the royal wedding as Lady Diana married Prince Charles and became a princess.
It was just like a fairy tale--horse-drawn carriage and all. We all wanted her dress. And her hair. The jewelry was in demand too. (The husband, not so much.)
But an informal poll of my 15-year-old daughter's friends indicates that they're not captivated by all things royal this time around. It's not the teenagers who are interested in this event: it's the brides-to-be, whose average age is now 27.
In contrast, the average American bride in 1980 was 22 years old--much closer in age to the teenagers I surveyed today.
However, if you've got Royal Wedding fever, you might want to stop in and celebrate at Dunkin' Donuts the week of April 29. They'll be offering a special-edition Royal Wedding Donut: a heart-shaped jelly donut topped with vanilla and chocolate drizzle. Baskin-Robbins is planning an ice-cream cake inspired by English garden design.
Since the wedding will be taking place at 6 AM Eastern time, I might even be able to grab one of those special donuts before settling in to watch the latest fairy-tale nuptials on TV. My daughter, though, intends to sleep through the whole thing. See if she gets a donut!
