You've probably seen and heard plenty of appeals for donations of school supplies for kids whose parents can't afford them. It's a great cause, and I encourage you to take advantage of back-to-school sales and give a bag or two of looseleaf, crayons, pencils and pens to one of these charities.

We recently came upon an announcement in our church bulletin asking for just such donations.  It gave the usual information:  when and where the collection would take place and what types of items were requested.  We were requested to bring items to church the following Sunday and put them in the marked boxes near the front door.

That all sounded easy enough--so easy, in fact, that we were mystified by the last part of the announcement:  "Volunteers will be standing by to assist you."  Because we all need a little extra help putting that bag of Ticonderoga pencils and Crayola crayons into a labeled box.  Right.

Whether or not there's a volunteer standing by, don't pass up the opportunity to be generous to the "fill-a-backpack" drives in your area.  The need is certainly great, and let's face it--it's FUN to buy a box of new crayons.
