J. Crew is well-known for its classic, preppy work and leisure styles. Believe it or not, the company has been around since 1947. Originally founded as the Popular Club Plan, it sold women’s clothing through in-home demonstrations. The company went through several different names and owners, largely focusing on catalog sales. In its final incarnation as J. Crew, CEO Mickey Drexler has expanded the brand into an international chain with hundreds of retail stores and a website encompassing menswear, wedding gowns, a children’s line (Crewcuts) and a denim brand (Madewell). When it-girl Jenna Lyons joined as President and Creative Director, J. Crew incorporated more high-end designs and gained popularity as a cult brand with high-profile customers, most notably First Lady Michelle Obama. J. Crew is the place to go for everything from a classic $60 swimsuit to unique luxury splurges, like a $1,200 sequin fringe top.
