What to Buy/What Not to Buy in December

What to Buy/What Not to Buy in December
Linsay Thomas

With Christmas just around the corner, shopping is on everyone’s mind. With so many sales and special deals, you’re likely to believe that now’s the best time to buy just about anything. While the holiday spirit may be encouraging you to spend a little more, it’s actually a good time to take a few moments to review your shopping habits. While stores are offering excellent buys on a variety of items, it’s a good idea to wait until after the first of the year for some items. Read on for a handy guide on what to buy and what not to buy in December.

December is a good month for toys, with the best deals around the middle of the month. However, don’t wait too long, especially if the toy is a popular one; you want to buy it before the stores sell out.

Kitchen ItemsDecember 2

The holidays mean a lot of cooking, so November and December are good times to buy kitchen items and cookware. Macy’s and Amazon are good places to save big and perhaps find deals on cutlery and bakeware sets.

If you’ve had your eye on a 2014 model, December is a great time to splurge. Expect low prices, as dealers are looking to meet sales goals and get rid of older vehicles to make room for the 2015 models. Learn how to haggle with the salespeople and save even more.

Prepare for your New Year’s Eve celebration by stocking up on the champagne. There is a lot of demand, which usually isn't a good thing. However, this means that there's a lot of competition among the companies, which means lower prices for you.

Home Items

This one is a mixed bag. There are some items you should buy now and some you should wait for. Tools are a great buy right before Christmas, as many stores offer rare gift sets. If you’re in need of a dishwasher or refrigerator, December is a great time for appliances, with savings ranging from 20-40%. Mattresses and box springs are also a great buy this time of year. However, skip the carpeting, paint, wallpaper and other remodeling items. Look for excellent deals in the spring, when you can save as much as 50%.

High Quality TVsDecember3

Sure, you can find plenty of cheap, lesser-known brands of television sets on Black Friday and the weeks leading up to Christmas. But if you’re looking for a good deal on an HDTV or something with high-end technology, your best bet is to wait until late January, when many retailers advertise huge Super Bowl savings.

Cashmere Clothing

With so many deals on popular Christmas gifts, you’ll want to wait until January to buy luxury items such as cashmere clothing. By waiting just one more month, you can reap savings of up to 60%.

Winter Clothing/Sports Gear

With so many people buying sweaters and ski equipment, don’t expect discounts on these types of items. The big sales start happening in March. For the best deals, wait until summer, when you can see prices drop by 75% or more.
