Budget-Friendly Ways to Make the First Day of School Special

Budget-Friendly Ways to Make the First Day of School Special
Susan Smith

Each year, the beginning of a new school year looms over a summer of fun activities, family time and being outdoors. A lot of kids (and parents) look forward to going back to a schedule, while others have a really hard time with it. This year, create something new and special that can be done year after year, and create your own back-to-school tradition. Check out this list for a few ideas.

Pick a Special Outfitback to school fashion

A back to school outfit is a necessity. Head to the stores armed with all the coupons that you can find to pick out a special first day of school outfit. Kids will be so excited to wear their new outfit that they will be counting down the days. Just be sure not to let them wear it before the first day of school, or it will lose all the magic. A new pair of shoes may also do the trick. And you can make it even more fun with a family fashion show!

Back to School Breakfast

Make your kids a back to school breakfast that will give them great energy for the day ahead. Make pancakes in the number of the grade they will be attending, or use a cookie cutter to put powdered sugar on top of French toast in their grade number. Surprise them with something out of the ordinary to be sure they get the fuel they need to start their day off right. Don’t forget to plan an awesome snack for when they get home as well. The first day of school can be exhausting.

Once they are dressed in their new outfit or shoes, get ready to take a back to school photo shoot of your own. Pick up a cheap picture frame and use a free printable sign with the grade your child will be entering. Try this chalkboard version found on Pinterest, or this cute owl version found on Teachers Pay Teachers. Both are totally free to print and use in your photos. Or for something different, try a back to school photo booth! Check out this set of free printables. Just print and attach to sticks, then let the kids go crazy while you snap away.

Lunch Box Love

When lunch time rolls around, let your little one know that you are thinking of them with a special note. Check out these free lunch box printables to make any lunch fancy. They will really appreciate taking a piece of home to school with them, especially on the first day back.

The Back To School Fairy

The Back To School Fairy comes to some households, bringing with her new school supplies and a note about how fun heading back to school will really be. New pencils, crayons, or a folder could be delivered the night before to bring excitement to any child feeling nervous about the first day. If you want to add a little flair, spray hair spray and then put a little glitter on top. It adds that extra fairy sparkle to make it very believable. And then it brushes off easily before putting it in the backpack.

Send in a Back To School Treat for the Whole Class

Help your child get off on the right foot in his or her new classroom with a small snack for each kid. Just be sure to check with your child’s teacher for any food and allergy policies in the new classroom. Here are some free printables to attach to Goldfish, Pop Rocks, or if you can’t send in food, try a free printable for pencils.

With a little extra planning, the first day of school can be really fun. Pick one or more of these to do each year and you’ll have yourself a new family tradition for back to school. Take all your photos and add them to a special back to school photo book. In the future, your kids can look back and remember how awesome going back to school was each year!
