Planning an Escape

Planning an Escape
Barb Szyszkiewicz

We got a taste of summer weather here the other day which, though it was a welcome opportunity to open the windows and let in some fresh air, just didn't seem to fit in with the piles of snow boots and mittens that are still all over the place.  Sixty-degree temperatures in December just feel weird--and it gets dark too early for the kids to really enjoy a warm day.

If I wanted to really enjoy some warm weather at this time of year, I'd have to take a vacation.

Planning a vacation in this family can be a complicated endeavor.  First of all, it's hard to find a destination that pleases all the kids (ages 6 to 16) as well as both parents.  Generally speaking, if there's water involved, we're good to go.  We all like the beach.  In fact, we had taken a beach vacation four years running and were all set to do the same this year until our daughter broke her foot in the middle of the summer.

Sand and casts don't mix.  We needed to find another travel idea that pleased everyone.  So we took a cruise to the Bahamas.  I said I would only go if there were no storms out there at sea.

When we booked the cruise there was nothing out there. The next day, Tropical Storm Fay blew up out of nowhere.

Fay followed us around all week and she stuck with us even when we were back on land. The ship had to dock at a different port and we were bused back to our cars. The bus ride was scary.

We had reservations at a hotel near our friends in Ormond Beach, but when we got there the hotel was locked up tight. The lights were off and nobody was home. After we visited our friends we headed north to Palm Coast where we found a place to stay.

It was a long, wet drive north the next day, but we got home safely and with plenty of memories of a very interesting vacation--no sunscreen needed!
