The Pure Food Movement

Many years ago, foods were bought and sold strictly within the local communities. Farmers and cattle herders as well as fisherman peddled their wares on the streets and food was all natural. Over time, however, with the inception of government regulations and mass production, much of the food we eat has taken an unnatural turn. Food is often processed with a lot of chemicals and preservatives that can be harmful to our health and most people are oblivious to the ingredients they ingest on a daily basis. The Pure Food Movement is working to combat this growing problem by encouraging the purchase and production of whole, natural foods. Often, organic and locally grown foods are encouraged.

One very large issue within the Pure Food Movement is that of genetically engineered foods. Science has made great strides with agriculture, and now farmers can harvest larger crops a lot quicker because of genetic modification. The downside to this is that it can cause a myriad of health problems for humans and animals, mainly because of hormones that are implemented in the growth or feed process. The Movement believes that these hormones can cause a number of problems including stunted growth, cancer, and other health related issues. It also negatively impacts the environment by contaminating water supplies and harming animals that consume contaminated produce or water.

The idea of pure foods is not new. In fact, the Pure Food Movement began in the late 1800s. People recognized that additives and harmful pesticides can be bad for everyone involved. Today, products like chemical-laden snacks and other “healthy” food items can actually be bad for peoples’ health. New regulations are being implemented to help make sure that the food people eat is as safe and natural as possible.
