After you buy a gift certificate, it's mailed or e-mailed to the person you bought it for, and he or she can go to that online store and buy something directly over the Internet. Some sites even sell gift certificates that are good at a wide range of online stores, so you don't even have to try figuring out which store's gift certificate to buy. So not only does the person receiving the gift certificate get to choose what to buy, but they also get to select which store to buy it from. Not a bad deal!
