It's hard to resist the allure of an old-fashioned country store. Large wood barrels hold tempting treats. Beautifully labeled bottles offer to easily remove stains from laundry, make dull wood gleam, and make the wood fire glow with every color of the rainbow. Shelves overflow with simple, practical, yet somehow fashionable garments. Cozy flannel sheets make people long for snowy winter days. Children gravitate towards the toys, reminiscent of the ones with which their grandparents played. Vrest and Ellen Orton were determined to retain that old-fashioned country store air when they opened The Vermont Country Store in 1946. Today, the store is owned by 4th and 5th generation storekeepers who keep the tradition alive. Their online site offers clothing, toys, mouth-watering treats, household supplies and much more.
