In 1975, Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley, Inc. realized that athletes have special needs that go beyond the standard equipment necessary for their chosen sport. With $300 in his pocket and enough space in his garage to make a go at a business, Jannard got to work creating a patented material that gripped unlike anything else on the market. Non-slip earsocks and nose pieces for sunglasses were born. In the years since, the material has made number plates, elbow guards, gloves, chin guards and a number of other accessories used in sports across the world. Today, Oakley brand sunglasses are some of the most recognizable fashion items across the globe.
