German immigrant Frederick August Otto Schwarz (spread the word, there is no "t" in Schwarz) wanted to create a world where toys seemed to come alive and buyers would find only the highest-quality products. In 1862, in Baltimore, Maryland, his dream turned into the brick-and-mortar store "Toy Bazaar." His store quickly became known as the go-to place for the highest-quality toys available. A decade later, having relocated to New York, Schwarz opened what would later become the iconic store known as "FAO Schwarz." Today, it's considered the oldest toy store in the United States. Although the 5th Avenue location is no longer in existence, children and children-at-heart can still find unique, high-quality, magical offerings online at the FAO Schwarz website. And "Big" lovers everywhere will be thrilled to learn that they can still order a "Big Piano Dance Mat" and introduce a new generation to a true classic.
