If you have a new driver in your house, you’ll know where I’m coming from. Teens are basically clueless about directions. They have no idea about how to get from here to there. 
A few weeks ago, the Zits comic strip ran a series about a teen driver and his ability to get lost. In one panel, the newly-licensed young man drives out of his driveway…and drives…and drives…and then calls his dad, asking how to get home. His dad tells him to look for a landmark. In the final frame, the teen is driving past the Eiffel Tower. The series ends with the harried parents buying a GPS for their kid.
Having a GPS in the house allows us as parents of a teen driver to feel a little more secure when he’s out in the car. We know that he’s not going to get lost–although he’s had his moments when he decides to try to ignore the GPS so he can attempt to use my Super-Secret Back Way Home from School. The GPS doesn’t want to go that way. It wants him to take the highway. Fortunately, he has that backup, so he can stay on track.
While I resist using a GPS on a regular basis, it is nice to have when I’m in uncharted territory. When I took my son on two college visits in Philadelphia, it was invaluable. Yes, I had the map provided by the schools, but that doesn’t help when roads are closed due to construction and block parties!
