Who’s up for a shag?

Bear RugIs there anything more boring then shopping for a new rug? Okay, maybe wallpaper shopping has it beat hands down. But I have wonderfully dull memories of shopping for stuff like that when I was a kid. My sister and I would sit and look at all the colors, flip through the samples and practically break down into tears we were so bored. Ugh. Thankfully, these days you can shop for rugs online, so it’s fast, fun and easy! Plus you can save some good money too. (This is what’s called foreshadowing… See, my parents didn’t waste all their money on my college education.)

Here’s 2 quick and hopefully entertaining rug-related anecdotes for you:

1) After college, I moved in with a bunch of friends. We ended up renting a big house for the 5 of us. We drew straws (or rolled dice or something) to see who got which room, as they were all quite different in size. Well, the room I ended up with was quite clearly a little girl’s room previously. How could I tell? Well for starters, there was the bright pink carpeting. And second, there was one of those Tot Finder stickers on the window. So yes, for 2 years I continually suffered the abuses of my fellow housemates, most often acting out a tale of the fire department or police coming to the house, racing to my room and saying, “It’s all right little girl, we’ll get you out of there okay…” Sigh.

2) Flash forward a year or so later and I’m married and we’re moving into our first apartment. Nice big place with easily the ugliest carpet you’ve ever seen this side of, well, I don’t even want to think what’s uglier. Name a color and it was in there, all with a putrid shade. Not green, but puke green. Not yellow, but vomit yellow. Get the picture? So for our anniversary, my good buddy Pat got us brand-new wall-to-wall carpeting. He and I discussed it and while we were away on our honeymoon (uh, my wife and I, not Pat and I…), he arranged everything with the carpeting folks and had it installed. We settled on a nice beige and my wife and I loved it. It really changed the place and even though we knew we were only staying in that place for a short time (1 or 2 years), it made our first home that much more special. So of course a few weeks after we got it… my wife dropped a bottle of liquid Tide right in the middle of the floor. Blue Tide. Like half the bottle. On a beige carpet. Good thing we were only staying there for a short while, right? Heh.

So those are my two fondest carpets so now I’ll help you start some carpet memories of your own… Well, okay, they’ll have to be more like area rug memories (which are much prettier then carpets, though not as squishy on your toes)…

Thanks for the kind words, Garry! Much appreciated. And yes it could’ve been a guy, but highly doubtful. Especially since we knew that the previous owners had a few kids. Heh. But thanks for trying to make me feel better! Where were you 12 years ago?!?

Hehe, I’ve seen similar on Designer Pages. This Panda Bear rug is pretty crazy.

Got hooked by the title and then really enjoyed the article.
Interesting idea your history in carpets/rugs and the stains thereon.
