I never knew the many ways that duct tape could be used, beyond basic home repair, until my niece proudly displayed a wallet she’d made out of colored duct tape. 

For that matter, I didn’t know that duct tape came in colors:  I thought it was only available in basic gray.

Since then, I’ve learned that not only does duct tape come in just about any color imaginable, but clever kids and teens like my niece have made all kinds of interesting things with it.  Before she hit middle school, Jessie had already constructed a dollhouse out of a cardboard box and duct tape–and made furniture to go inside.

My older son’s Boy Scout troop has a “duck tape patrol” whose flag is made from blue and white duct tape, with a stuffed duck (kidnapped from my younger son’s toy box) duct-taped to one side.

Then there are the enterprising teens who make entire prom dresses out of duct tape.  I’m amazed at their creativity, but I have to wonder how comfortable a plastic prom dress could possibly be.

Those duct-tape wallets are impressive and useful.  My son has one that he made after seeing what his cousin had done.  It’s gone through the washer and the dryer (several times) with no ill effects.  Clearly, duct-tape crafts are waterproof and durable.  That beats crepe paper and pipe cleaners, hands down.
