In my home state of New Jersey, there is a crosswalk law that states that cars must stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. 

There are too many people out there who misunderstand that law.

I’ve come very close to being hit, more than once, by cars who don’t bother to stop when a pedestrian is walking in a crosswalk.

But in my experience, the pedestrians are more guilty of abusing the law.  Try driving in any supermarket parking lot around here, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.  People seem to be under the impression that although there are crosswalks spaced about three lanes apart all along the length of the parking lot, they can just step off the curb in front of any store.  They don’t even have to look both ways.  The cars will just have to stop for them, because they’re pedestrians and they’re crossing–crosswalk or no crosswalk.
