For several years now, I’ve been my mother’s personal online shopper. I can talk about secure websites and checking for the little padlock icon and the “https” in front of the name of a website until I’m blue in the face–she will not order anything online.

But that doesn’t stop her from online shopping.   Not everything she wants can be found in the catalogs that come in the mail.  And that’s where I come in.  She just calls me on the phone and says, “Are you near your computer?”  Before I can answer yes or no, she’s telling me what she wants me to find.  Naturally I stop here first, so I can find her a deal as well.  I’ve ordered books, Christmas gifts like a guitar for my nephew, clothing and more for her.  After I submit the order, she mails me a check.  Recently, a friend of hers was trying to locate some dress clothes for her grandsons to wear to an upcoming wedding.  Mom told her not to worry.  She called and asked if I could find matching sport coats for these little boys.  (I did, and they were on sale.)  Then she told her friend where to find them.

I love helping my mom find a good deal.  But if I do all the work for her, she’ll never learn to do it on her own.  My mission to help her become more computer-literate by tutoring her over the phone has not gone well–you have no idea how many times I’ve taught her how to copy and paste, for instance.  It looks like I’ll be helping Mom shop for a long time to come.

I’ve been avoiding it for some time now. But when I started losing at “The Alphabet Game” that our 7-year-old insists we play every time we get into the car because I wasn’t seeing road signs and license plates fast enough, it was clear that I couldn’t avoid it any longer.  My eye doctor agreed.

It’s time for me to get bifocals.

I’ve been wearing glasses full-time since the seventh grade, and that really doesn’t bother me too much.  But bifocals are another story.  My husband has the progressive lenses that the eye doctor recommended for me as well, and he’s been delighting in telling me just how challenging it is to play tennis while wearing them.  This is supposed to put me more at ease about getting used to wearing a whole different kind of glasses?

At least I got to pick out a cool pair of new frames.  And now I wait for them to be ready, so I can relearn how to walk down the stairs without falling.  Maybe I’ll do that by pretending I’m carrying a giant laundry basket–I can never see the stairs over one of those anyway, so I just look straight ahead and go.  Think that’ll work?

It’s my husband’s birthday today.  And since it is neither a weekend nor a holiday, he has to work today.   So the birthday celebration won’t begin until he’s home at dinnertime.

I’m working on planning a special meal and a nice cake.  Unfortunately, it’s hard to find one cake that pleases everyone in the family.  One kid only likes chocolate; another prefers vanilla.  My husband isn’t a chocolate-cake fan either.  One year I found a root-beer-float cake recipe somewhere on the internet, and made that for his birthday.  What a disaster!  It looked fine but didn’t taste so great, so the poor guy had no birthday cake that year.

A lot of times I just prefer to avoid the whole “what kind of cake are we having” question and just make 2 batches of cupcakes:  1 chocolate, 1 vanilla.  But we’re not having any company, and 48 cupcakes is an awful lot for a family of 5.

No matter what kind of cake I wind up baking, though, I know the kids are going to insist on a certain kind of candle.  They love those “trick” candles that light back up after you blow them out.  In fact, my daughter always wants them for her own birthday, even though we keep telling her that there’s no trick in trick candles if you’re planning to use them for yourself.

My teenage son’s summer job has been testing fire alarms for a local security-and-alarm company.

Fire alarms in businesses and schools must be tested each year to comply with local fire codes.  Of course, summer is the only time that school fire alarms can be tested, so he’s been getting the grand tour of many area school districts.  He comes home each day with interesting stories to tell, about the ingenius ways these alarms (often located on high ceilings) are cleaned and tested.  The individual alarms are tested as well as the system as a whole.  Any detectors and alarms that need repair are listed so that a technician can replace them.

Before they can turn on a whole building’s system of fire alarms, everyone in the building needs to be notified of the test, so there is no panic.  Being a typical teenager, my son regrets that his employer is very careful to observe that rule.

Yesterday, my son told me about a service call that one of the technicians received last winter.  It was Christmas Eve, and they complained that their alarm, near the Christmas tree, was beeping.  They wanted it fixed immediately, regardless of the overtime cost.  The technician discovered that the alarm was not malfunctioning at all; it wasn’t even making any noise.  The noise was coming from a contractor’s beeper that had fallen into the Christmas tree.

I admit it–I jumped on the bandwagon and got an iPod touch. 

I was perfectly happy with the mp3 player I already owned.  Then, as I was running errands one day and listening to the satellite radio in my car, I discovered that there was an app for that.  I could listen to my favorite satellite-radio stations anywhere I could get an internet connection.  That sold me.

I’ve been having fun exploring the different apps that are out there.  Weather (including one just for hurricanes), games, web clippers, recipe databases and conversion utilities (which I use for “translating” recipes from metric to American) are only a few of the seemingly endless options.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed–but in a good way.

We’ve come a long way since the Pony Express. 

150 years ago, that was the only way to get a letter from place to place in the West.  Young men would carry mail on their routes for the price of $5 per half-ounce.  Remember, $5 in 1860 went a lot farther than $5 in 2009!

It was a dangerous job.  Horses were replaced every 10 to 15 miles, but riders only every 75 to 100, so a rider would go through up to 10 horses before ending his shift.  Operating for just 18 months, until it was replaced by the newly-invented telegraph, the Pony Express employed 183 men during its time of operation.  Here’s their want-ad:  “Wanted:  Young, skinny, wiry fellows.  Not over 18.  Must be expert riders.  Willing to risk death daily.  Orphans preferred.”

That doesn’t sound like the kind of summer job I’d want my teenage son to take.  Even if it did pay $100 a month.

Reading about the Pony Express doesn’t make me wish I lived 150 years ago.  Instead, I appreciate Brown and FedEx and Express Mail and regular mail more and more.   And I appreciate them most when I’m able to score a deal with free shipping.  After all, who doesn’t like free?

Who wants a clean house?  Clearly, not my kids.   Or maybe they just want a clean house as long as they don’t have to help clean it.

To hear my children tell it, I’m torturing them by making them do chores.  The youngest one is the worst.  Although he will cheerfully swish Comet around the bowl of a toilet until the foam threatens to overflow (leaving the rest of the toilet to be cleaned by someone else),  he loses it when asked to carry bottles to the recycling bin or pick up the lacrosse sticks, tennis balls and light sabers that he and his friends leave strewn around the back porch.  The only thing that gets him moving at that point is the sight of me with a Hefty bag in my hand.

I’m no neat freak–I’ll settle happily for “reasonably sanitary and fairly tidy.”  My daughter delights in writing graffiti in the dust on the dining-room sideboard.  (Mom made me do all the dusting as a child, so I rebel by neglecting it now).  Being pragmatic, I know that I could do the cleaning (even the dusting) and the picking up of toys and sports equipment in less time and with far less aggravation than when I force my children into slavery ask them to help me.  But being a parent, I know that I need to make myself obsolete.  The kids need to learn how to cook, clean, do laundry, manage money and do simple repairs, so they can become responsible adults and run their own households.

I love the convenience of digital cameras.   When I took a photography class sixteen years ago, I learned that every time you clicked the shutter on your camera, you were spending 50 cents.  That covered the cost of the film as well as the processing.  With digital photography, you can click that shutter as many times as you want to, with almost no cost at all.  Unlimited opportunities to make sure nobody blinked just as you took the picture?  Priceless!

But many digital cameras, including mine, come with rechargeable batteries.  While it’s great not to have to worry about carrying an endless supply of double-A’s, these also mean that you need to bring your charger on longer trips.  Buying a spare rechargeable battery for a digital camera can run almost $100.

I forgot to bring my camera’s battery charger when we went on vacation a couple of weeks ago.  That meant that by the end of the trip, as we approached New York City and the Statue of Liberty in the early morning, I was down to the very end of my camera’s battery life–this after not using the camera much to capture scenery, because there wasn’t too much scenery to be seen with all the fog!  Then when we got home, I couldn’t download the pictures until I’d spent six hours recharging the battery.

It really makes me nostalgic about my first SLR camera, that worked even when the $5 button-cell battery that ran its light meter had died (after several years).  As long as you knew the basics of how to set the camera for proper exposure, you were good to go.

The least they could do is make a single charger that would handle cameras, cell phones, mp3 players, PDAs, Game Boys and all those other indispensible digital gadgets.  Until then, the average family will need to bring a separate piece of luggage just for all the chargers.
