A Halloween Treat

I love Halloween. Easily one of my favorite holidays, what with the costumes, the candy, the decorations. It’s all just crazy fun. And while times certainly have changed, I still remember some of the costumes from my childhood. For the most part, I remember every year going to the store with my mom and checking out the costume displays. Today, kids have a complete wardrobe of comfortable, great-looking costumes based on just about every character under the sun. Heck, there are entire stores dedicated to costumes now. Not so, back in the day.

I believe we’d hit the local toy store (although for some reason, I’m remembering the supermarkets carrying them too), and it wouldn’t be fancy costumes on hangers. No way. Instead, we’d have pyramids of boxes. Yes, kids, in days of old, Halloween costumes came in boxes. Cheap cardboard boxes with see-through plastic on the front. And the costume itself? Oh, they were just awful. They consisted of 2 parts. First was the body, which was nothing more than a thin piece of plastic, sort of like a smock, complete with little ties in the back. Kind of like hospital gowns I guess. Except on the front, they’d make it look like the body of the character you’re wearing… and also have a big picture of the character right on the chest. That part always struck me as insanely odd. Instead of like a big “S” logo for Superman, they’d have a picture of Superman. Kind of takes the “realism” out of the costume, huh? As for the second part, that’d be the glorious super-thin, don’t-touch-it-or-it-will-certainly-crack plastic mask. And it was one of those cheap plastic masks that have a rubber band stapled to it on two sides to keep it on your head. Awesome is an understatement.

As for selection, I think I was lucky if I got to choose from more than 5 characters. And sadly, all I recall now is a Chewbacca and Darth Vader one. I added my own prop (a glow-in-the-dark lightsaber knock-off toy) and was set.

Years later (as evidenced by that glorious photo above right, which I just found at my parents’ house and had to share with you all), I scoffed at the boxed costumes and started making my own. Not sure what year that photo’s from, but as you can see I was dressed up as a dinosaur hunter. Not buying that, huh? Yeah, me neither. I have no clue what I was, other than some sort of park ranger with a rifle. Yes, those are my corduroy pants and my dad’s old army shirt. That rifle was a toy gun I played with all the time. So the only real thing I did was get a baseball cap and tape some official looking patches on to it. And to my right was my good friend Chris, who came up with the very clever idea to dress up as a ghost. Yeah, we were super hardcore costumers, weren’t we?

I remember walking the streets with Chris at like 3 or 4 in the afternoon, us carrying our pillow cases full of tons of candy, as dozens upon dozens of other kids walked by. And of course, the best part was making it home at the end, dumping out all that candy into a giant pyramid, and then commencing with the candy trading! Don’t know about you, but right now I am dying for a Kit-Kat…

Anyways, it’s Halloween once again, so I just want to wish everyone a safe and super spooky-filled holiday. Remember to bring flashlights and save your extra candy for your favorite blogger. Uh… or me. Whichever comes first.

Happy Halloween!

Fall Preparations

It’s my favorite season.  Right now the leaves on the trees around here are turning all sorts of beautiful colors.  The nights are a little chilly—cool enough for a jacket, but not so cold that you can’t sleep with the windows open.  I’m happy to take out the long-sleeved shirts again, even if it’s almost too warm to wear them by midafternoon.  And let’s not forget about one of my favorite sports.  Bring on the college football!  I’m not ashamed to admit that I regularly embarrass my children by screaming at the television while my favorite team takes the field.

On a recent weekend we took a drive to visit my parents, who live 125 miles north of us.  What a difference that (and a little altitude) made in the fall colors that we saw on the trip!  There were even some areas that were already “past peak” but I’d say that we enjoyed an excellent show of color.  Definitely photo-album-worthy!

I don’t mind raking, but that’s probably because we don’t have too many trees.  Of course, the best part about raking is jumping into the big pile of leaves that you’ve made, even if it does scatter them all over the place again!

Fall is my favorite season, but it ushers in my least favorite season:  winter.  I’m not a person who tolerates the cold well.  When the temperature dips below 50, you’ll probably see me out and about wearing gloves!  I spent one winter living in the Midwest and it was just way too cold for me there.  I wore a full-length down coat from November through March.  Then I moved back to the East Coast and gave away the coat, because it just never gets cold enough here for me to need something like that.

That reminds me—I should go find my gloves before the next chilly morning!

Blogging for Coupons

Let me begin by saying that I am thrilled to be part of things here at Ultimate Coupons! I’m a homemaker with three children ages 6 to 16. Come December, two of my children will be teenagers, so if I ever happen to post another picture of myself on this site, you’ll see my rapidly graying hair. In addition to being Wife, Mom, Household Chef, Cleaning Lady, Chauffeur, Laundress, Personal Shopper, Disciplinarian, Finder of All Lost Things and General Nag, I’m also a teacher and writer. (And I sing a mean “Hotel California” in Guitar Hero: World Tour.)

By the way, that very flattering photo Andrew posted yesterday is NOT a picture of me. There are very few actual pictures of me, because I’m generally the one holding the camera. That is not coincidental. I hate having my picture taken. My daughter did pry the camera out of my hands one time this summer, and here’s the one picture I am willing to display in public.

I’m happy to be here, Blogging for Coupons, since I believe it’s my sworn duty to be careful with my family’s money. Coupons help me do that, and this site helps me find great coupons. It’s nice to shop in stores sometimes, but most of the time I feel that I can’t stand one more errand. I spend more than enough time in the car driving my kids to Boy Scouts, orthodontist appointments, and basketball practice. So I’m happy to shop online and have the Package Truck bring me a box in a day or three. Andrew’s already mentioned the benefit of wearing pajamas. That’s frowned upon at Boy Scouts, the orthodontist, and basketball practice, but it’s great for writing and shopping from home. Let’s just say there’s not going to be a webcam on my laptop anytime soon.

New Kid in Town

Working from home most definitely has its advantages. Easy commutes, no dress code (heck, pajamas are actually encouraged) and no co-workers stealing your lunch. Not to mention the money-saving advantages like tax write-offs and filling up the car with gas maybe once every few weeks. But even still, there are things I do miss about not working in a “real” office. Tops on that list? Lunch.

No, I haven’t given up eating lunch since I’ve been working from home, but lunch was more than just cramming food in your mouth for sustenance. It’s a social gathering. Heck, my co-workers and I would spend hours every morning deciding which horrible fast food place we’d hit that day for lunch. That was the highlight of my morning. Followed by the actual mass exodus at lunch, and the inevitable “did we really just eat that?” regret upon our return. Ah, the memories.

But even better than just regular lunch, was a special lunch. Mainly, when a new employee was hired. It was always tradition to take out the “new guy” on his first day. Get to know him, make him feel welcome, show him a good place to eat, etc. And of course, since it was a “new guy,” the company would end up paying for it. Nice long, free lunch. Yeah, that was living it. And at my old company, we went through a lot of hirings back in the day, let me tell ya.

Which brings me to the present. I don’t have any free lunches to offer, but I do have a “new guy” to tell you about. Actually, it’s a “new gal.” I’m happy to annouce that we’ve got a new member of the Ultimate Coupons Team. She’s going to be helping me out here on the Everybody Loves Coupons blog, bringing you tales of her own life, as well as those ever-popular coupons.

So who is this mystery woman? Her name’s Barb and she’s not only a moderator in the coupon forum over at FamilyCorner.com, but she’s a blogger as well, busting her writing chops over at Mom’s Fridge (chock full of yummy sounding recipes like Chicken Fajita Soup!) and her personal blog SFO Mom. She’s also got her mind and finger on the budget pulse, as she feeds her family of five. A great personable writing style and affection for coupons? Yeah, she should fit right in here at EverybodyLovesCoupons. So please give Barb a big warm welcome, and be on the lookout for her very first post real soon. Welcome aboard, Barb!

COUPON CORNER:

All this talk about food has me hungry. Granted, I’m always hungry. But rather than post more food coupons, I’ll play up the office angle and offer some great coupons for office supplies!

Cereal Killer

I was recently talking to a friend of mine about cereal. Sure there are the adult variety like Honey Bunches of Oats or even some of the Kashi cereals that are not only healthy (and uber fiber-filled), but pretty tasty too. But what we were talking about were the good cereals. The kinds you had as a kid (if you’re mom allowed it). The kind that were more colorful than a rainbow, sweeter than a sugar cube and guaranteed to have some sort of cutesy animal on the box.

As a kid, my mom was semi strict when it came to cereals. For the most part, no obvious sugar cereals. So something like Frosted Flakes (which is nothing more than Corn Flakes with six crates of sugar poured in) was a no no. Yet, something like Alpha-Bits was fine. Maybe it was the educational value of it. Marshmallow cereals like Lucky Charms were oddly enough okay too. As were the occasional Fruit Loops, Trix or Apple Jacks. The one hard and fast rule, though, was: “No chocolate cereals!”

“But mom, you make us chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast on the weekends,” I’d say. Or rather, whine.

“No.”

“But moooooom, there’s a funny looking bird on the box who’s going cuckoo!”

“No.”

“But Chris has it every morning for breakfast and when I sleep over I get to have some!”

“I said no!”

“But mom, there’s actually LESS sugar in this chocolate cereal than in the Fruit Loops you always buy us.”

Yeah, those were the days we came home with real boring cereals like plain old icky Wheaties.

Lately I’ve been craving some old standbys that I probably haven’t eaten in seriously over a decade. Golden Grahams. Honeycomb. Super Sugar Crisp. (Which I think has since dropped the “super” in its title and gone “Golden.”) Sugar Pops. (Which I know has dropped the “sugar” in its name for obvious reasons. Too bad they didn’t do that when I was a kid!) Oh, and especially Fruity Pebbles! I used to only get those when I slept over my friend Chris’ house. Yeah, he had the best cereal collection around.

And now that I think of it, I doubt I’ve ever even tried Cocoa Puffs in my entire life. I was such a deprived child, wasn’t I? I may have to make it a new life goal to try a box. I know, I know. Talk about insane.

COUPON TIME:

Ah, cereal. The ultimate meal that literally any guy can cook. So in honor of the perfect anytime food, here’s a list of some great food coupons. Howl-o-ween Costumes

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a dog person way more than I am a cat person. Yes I love all animals (except for what they do to my allergies…), but if I could, I’d love to have like 10 dogs. I always wanted a golden retriever or husky to just run around with, wrestle with and go hiking with. When I think of “dog,” I completely picture a golden retriever. Active. Playful. Big (but not too big). So, growing up, what kind of dog did my family have? Yeah… a shih-tzu. Which is basically a black-and-white mop. With feet. And eyes.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved Muffin. Yes, Muffin was a he. And his name was Muffin. And yes, whenever he went to get groomed, he’d always come home with some pretty little ribbon in his hair. I think my friends teased me about it more than the local dog bullies teased Muffin. And for the record, we adopted him from a local shelter. I don’t remember what his name was, but my family decided to change it to Muffin. I was voting for Fu-Manchu, but got quickly ignored. Small though he was, Muffin was actually super playful. I could (and did) definitely wrestle with him; I just had to be careful not to crush him. He’d chase tennis balls around and bring them back to me, yet not give them up. So yeah, I’d have to chase him to get it back and toss it again.

One thing I never did, though, was dress him up in costumes. When I see poor dogs or cats wearing ridiculous costumes it makes me both laugh uncontrollably, as well as feel so bad for the poor animal. It totally knows how ridiculous it looks. But when extra treats are on the line, a dog (way more than a cat) will have zero shame. I think I’d simultaneously love and hate to go to a Pet Halloween Party where everyone’s dressed in costume. While hysterical, isn’t it really some form of animal abuse?

With that said, I’ll perpetuate the abuse by mentioning there’s a big Halloween Clearance sale on dog costumes over at Drs. Foster & Smith. And while I”m at it, here’s a slew of Pet Coupons to keep your pooches or kitties (and wallets!) happy:

Cupcakes or Flowers?

Flowers cupcakesI may be odd, but I actually prefer salty to sweet. Given a choice between a bag of chips (or cheese doodles… mmmmmmmmmmm….) and a plate of cookies, I’d grab the chips in a heartbeat. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy sweets, I just prefer snacks. When it comes to cake though, nothing beats a cupcake. Just something about the bite-sized nature of it, I think. It’s small enough to hold in your hand, they’re fun, there’s always frosting on ‘em. Just good stuff. Plus, how much more impressive is it to bring a big box of cupcakes to a party, rather than some stuffy old cake that you need to find a knife and slice into?

But have you ever had to choose between bringing dessert or flowers to a party or gathering? Yeah, me neither. But if you did, 1800Flowers now has the perfect solution. Cupcakes in Bloom are exactly what they sound like… floral bouquets in the fun cupcake shapes.  I don’t normally post about single products or specific companies, but I gotta admit these just look amazing. And there’s a whole bunch of other cake-related arrangements (and a margarita one too!) My favorite is probably the Slice of Life (see below) one!

And hey, I’ve even got a related coupon for you:

Think (and Shop) Pink!

Breast Cancer Awareness RibbonBesides prepping for Halloween, October has the distinction of being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last year I blogged about Shopping For a Cure, talking a bit about my own family’s experience with the disease. I also pointed out some of the great fund-raising products a number of merchants had jumped on board with in order to raise money for various breast cancer awareness programs. I’m ecstatic to see that the number of merchants joining in the battle has grown exponentially this year! Just about everybody has some pink product for sale on their site to help raise some funds (and some awareness). So I’ll spotlight a few here and just keep posting more and more as the month goes by.

Please show your support and help fight this awful disease that could affect someone very close to your heart.

Origins Online (ELC)Peace of Mind from Origins

CliniqueLimited-edition Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion from Clinique
For each Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion sold, Clinique will donate $10 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.
