I love Halloween. Easily one of my favorite holidays, what with the costumes, the candy, the decorations. It’s all just crazy fun. And while times certainly have changed, I still remember some of the costumes from my childhood. For the most part, I remember every year going to the store with my mom and checking out the costume displays. Today, kids have a complete wardrobe of comfortable, great-looking costumes based on just about every character under the sun. Heck, there are entire stores dedicated to costumes now. Not so, back in the day.
I believe we’d hit the local toy store (although for some reason, I’m remembering the supermarkets carrying them too), and it wouldn’t be fancy costumes on hangers. No way. Instead, we’d have pyramids of boxes. Yes, kids, in days of old, Halloween costumes came in boxes. Cheap cardboard boxes with see-through plastic on the front. And the costume itself? Oh, they were just awful. They consisted of 2 parts. First was the body, which was nothing more than a thin piece of plastic, sort of like a smock, complete with little ties in the back. Kind of like hospital gowns I guess. Except on the front, they’d make it look like the body of the character you’re wearing… and also have a big picture of the character right on the chest. That part always struck me as insanely odd. Instead of like a big “S” logo for Superman, they’d have a picture of Superman. Kind of takes the “realism” out of the costume, huh? As for the second part, that’d be the glorious super-thin, don’t-touch-it-or-it-will-certainly-crack plastic mask. And it was one of those cheap plastic masks that have a rubber band stapled to it on two sides to keep it on your head. Awesome is an understatement.
As for selection, I think I was lucky if I got to choose from more than 5 characters. And sadly, all I recall now is a Chewbacca and Darth Vader one. I added my own prop (a glow-in-the-dark lightsaber knock-off toy) and was set.
Years later (as evidenced by that glorious photo above right, which I just found at my parents’ house and had to share with you all), I scoffed at the boxed costumes and started making my own. Not sure what year that photo’s from, but as you can see I was dressed up as a dinosaur hunter. Not buying that, huh? Yeah, me neither. I have no clue what I was, other than some sort of park ranger with a rifle. Yes, those are my corduroy pants and my dad’s old army shirt. That rifle was a toy gun I played with all the time. So the only real thing I did was get a baseball cap and tape some official looking patches on to it. And to my right was my good friend Chris, who came up with the very clever idea to dress up as a ghost. Yeah, we were super hardcore costumers, weren’t we?
I remember walking the streets with Chris at like 3 or 4 in the afternoon, us carrying our pillow cases full of tons of candy, as dozens upon dozens of other kids walked by. And of course, the best part was making it home at the end, dumping out all that candy into a giant pyramid, and then commencing with the candy trading! Don’t know about you, but right now I am dying for a Kit-Kat…
Anyways, it’s Halloween once again, so I just want to wish everyone a safe and super spooky-filled holiday. Remember to bring flashlights and save your extra candy for your favorite blogger. Uh… or me. Whichever comes first.
Happy Halloween!

It’s my favorite season. Right now the leaves on the trees around here are turning all sorts of beautiful colors. The nights are a little chilly—cool enough for a jacket, but not so cold that you can’t sleep with the windows open. I’m happy to take out the long-sleeved shirts again, even if it’s almost too warm to wear them by midafternoon. And let’s not forget about one of my favorite sports. Bring on the college football! I’m not ashamed to admit that I regularly embarrass my children by screaming at the television while my favorite team takes the field.
Let me begin by saying that I am thrilled to be part of things here at Ultimate Coupons! I’m a homemaker with three children ages 6 to 16. Come December, two of my children will be teenagers, so if I ever happen to post another picture of myself on this site, you’ll see my rapidly graying hair. In addition to being Wife, Mom, Household Chef, Cleaning Lady, Chauffeur, Laundress, Personal Shopper, Disciplinarian, Finder of All Lost Things and General Nag, I’m also a teacher and writer. (And I sing a mean “Hotel California” in Guitar Hero: World Tour.)
I was recently talking to a friend of mine about cereal. Sure there are the adult variety like Honey Bunches of Oats or even some of the Kashi cereals that are not only healthy (and uber fiber-filled), but pretty tasty too. But what we were talking about were the good cereals. The kinds you had as a kid (if you’re mom allowed it). The kind that were more colorful than a rainbow, sweeter than a sugar cube and guaranteed to have some sort of cutesy animal on the box.
It’s still October (about halfway through in fact) and I’m still discovering more and more great merchants offering various pink products in support of various Breast Cancer Awareness charities. It’s seriously great to see so many more stores jumping on board for such an important fight.
Besides prepping for Halloween, October has the distinction of being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last year I blogged about
