It’s Opening Day!

Reggie Jackson YankeesEven though it’s rainy here in NY, we’re just about an hour away from kicking off the new baseball season with the Yankees. This is their last opening day in their current Yankee Stadium, since next year they move to the new one (just across the street). While I haven’t been to as many games there recently as I used to, I’m really hoping to hit 1 or 2 there this year for old-time’s sake. I have great memories of the stadium, catching games with my dad there and later on with my buddy Jeff. (Hint hint, Jeff. Go buy some tickets…)

And while some Yankees fans can be a bit, let’s say, impolite at the stadium, you just need to find the good areas to sit in and enjoy a great game of baseball with a $10 beer and a $7.50 hot dog or two. Maybe a little sushi to go with it too, but only if Matsui’s up at bat.

Anyways, regardless of who your favorite team is (or if you even like baseball, but hopefully you know someone who does), I figured I’d toss out the first pitch. I mean, toss out some baseball coupons for ya!

Back to the Future Fridays - Volume 13

Next week kicks off another month, another April and along with it, another April Fool’s Day. It got me thinking about how many songs there’ve been about fools. “Fool on the Hill” by the Beatles. “Fool for Your Loving No More” by Whitesnake. “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by the Who. “Dancin’ Fool” by The Guess Who. “Fool For You Anyway” by Foreigner. And I”m sure there’s about six gajillion country songs about fools, right?

So for this week’s flashback, I’ve gone back to those glory days of the ’80s where videos mattered and beyond seeing your favorite band all glammed up with giant wild poofy hair, ridiculous getups and enough cheese to surpass the moon’s supply, there were actually stories told through song and video. LIke maybe a classic take on a pretty poor girl who wants to attend a concert but these two evil twin sisters in some ludicrously high-fashion outfits try to stop her. Yeah, this week’s flashback totally sums up everything I love about the ’80s. No foolin’.

A Touch of Glass

Star Wars Burger King GlassesI was cleaning out one of our cupboards last night, wait, that’s night right. I have no clue why I said “cupboard.” It’s a cabinet. In the kitchen. A cupboard’s something Ol’ Mother Hubbard had, right? Anyways, I was digging around in there and came across something that brought back a huge flood (as opposed to a small flood?) of memories: A Captain America glass. This one I actually bought probably about 5 years ago at an antique store, but it’s from the early ’80s I gather and you totally know the type of glass I”m talking about. Super thin quality, with a cheesy picture of characters “painted” on and wrapped around the whole glass.

I never had any of these superhero ones as a kid, though I think they were some giveaway at 7-11. But I most definitely remember going to Burger King as a kid in the late ’70s/early ’80s right when the original Star Wars movies were actually in theaters. This was back when collectibles weren’t the merchandising juggernaut they are today. So when you could go get a Whopper and an extra large Coke with a Star Wars Collector’s Glass (for just 99 cents extra!), yeah, your world just suddenly got way brighter. We used to go like every week to make sure we got all the really cool ones (like the Boba Fett and Han Solo one from “Empire Strikes Back”!). And of course my sister and I both wanted one, so our cabinets were full of dozens of different themed glasses. I loved it!

Until… news reports started all this talk about red dye in these glasses being dangerous. I don’t honestly recall exactly what the issue was, but I’m sure it was related to lead paint somehow. While the reports kept going back and forth (Yes they’re dangerous, no they’re not), my mom wouldn’t take any chances and thus… threw out every single one. Sigh. A sad day in Mudville indeed.

So when I spotted these glasses at an antique store up in New Hampshire a few year’s back, I got all giddy and knew I had to have one. I would’ve grabbed a Star Wars one, except then I saw the Captain America one, which I never had, and just, well couldn’t resist. Anyone else getting a memory rush from some horribly painted glasses?

COUPON TIME:

All this talk about glasses has me thinking about eye glasses and contact lenses now. So here are some great eyewear coupons:

Springing into the Holidays

Easter BeagleSpring is officially here and you know what that means… Easter’s right around the corner. Followed by Passover. Growing up Jewish, I never had a problem with the end-of-the-year holidays since we got eight nights of presents on Chanukah (yeah, the last few nights were always lame gifts like socks or calendars, but still) versus the one day of Christmas. So that was fine. But Easter? Oh man. Passover just can’t hold a candle to it. Don’t believe me? Then I’ll just have to prove it by comparing both holidays in an unbiased and highly scientific manner.

Meals

Easter - Baked ham! Rack of Lamb! String bean casserole! Deviled eggs! Droool!
Passover - Matzah. Tuna fish on matzah. Matzah pizza. You get the picture… Though during the festive sedar meal there’s pot roast (sometimes yum), boiled chicken (always ick), matzah ball soup (booyah!) and bland veggies.

Sweets

Easter - Chocolate bunnies! Jelly Beans! Chocolate jelly bean bunnies! Better than Halloween I say!
Passover - Chocolate lollipops. (Depends on the brand…) Jelly rings. Jelly slices. Chocolate covered (yes, here it comes) matzah. Sigh.

TV

Easter - “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!” While watching Marcie chow down on eggshells is always funny, this classic is getting a bit stale.
Passover - “The 10 Commandments.” Charlton Heston! Yul Bryner! Edward G. Robinson! Staffs into snakes!?! Rivers of blood! The parting of the Red Sea! Yeah, real tough to beat this epic.

Guests

Easter - The Easter Bunny! Big floppy ears of love and hugs as he brings kids easter baskets filled with candy and presents.
Passover - Elijah the Prophet. Sure the door’s left open for him, but he just shows up, downs some wine and leaves.

Entertainment

Easter - Easter Egg Hunts! Frolicking through the backyard collecting eggs and pushing over other kids while stealing what’s in their basket? Classic!
Passover - Find the Afikomen! During the sedar, kids go off looking for the hidden afikomen (wrapped piece of matzah) and the winner gets to… eat it. Awesome.

Okay, do I need to go on? With the exception of 1 movie, Easter whips Passover’s butt. Course I could just go grab a couple of Cadbury Cream Eggs and cram them between two slices of matzah to get the best of both worlds…

COUPON TIME:

Finding coupons for eggs would be kinda boring I imagine. So instead, I’ll just offer up a few of the better deals I know of going on right now.

A Taxing Post

Tax HeadacheIn case you don’t own a calendar, we’re now less than one month away from the dreaded Tax Day. Booga Booga! Yeah, scary I know. Some people use CPAs, some people file online, and others still do it the old fashioned way by filling out loads of papers. Me? I’m terrible at this type of stuff and have all kinds of crazy deductions, some freelance income, investments, etc. But even if it was super simple, I’d still be terrible at it and hire someone. Thankfully I’ve already met with my CPA and finished everything off. But for those of you still waiting to fill it out, this post can help.

First off, I received an email from a generous reader named Tom. He gave me a printable coupon good for $30 off Tax Preparation at H&R Block (new clients only)! You’re considered a “new client” if you didn’t use H&R Block to prepare your taxes last year. I’m not sure if this coupon is a one-time use only one though, so I’m giving it out to the first person who comments on this post, telling me they want it. If it is good for more than 1 person, I’ll gladly share it with anyone else who comments that they want it. Thanks so much for sharing this with our readers, Tom!

And if you’d rather deal with doing things yourself, here are a number of online sites that can certainly help you get the job done:

Somebody Save Me

SmallvilleI’ve gotten too used to all those Auto-Save features on Microsoft Word and even in Google Docs (which is an awesome free online resource if you’ve never used it). Y’see, I started writing a great post this morning (okay, maybe “great” is a bit subjective), and I was probably about 75% through it when I realized I hadn’t saved it yet. That’s actually pretty unlike me, since I’m usually pretty anal about saving all my work 6,000 times while writing it. You never know when your computers just gonna crash on you, right?

So anyways, this blog is published through a program called WordPress. I rarely have any troubles at all with it. So I hit the “Save and Continue Editing” button so I can have a safe saved copy of my post and then get back to writing. Except. Well. When I hit the button, it went to page I’d never seen before that asked me if I really wanted to edit this page. Freaking out, I hit the BACK button on my browser praying that all my brilliant text would still be there. But what I saw staring back at me, no, make that mocking me was one big ol’ honkin’ page of nothing. Just white space. I tried going forward to reclaim it, but no good. And no saved draft was anywhere to be found. Frustrated, I tried again. This time I hit the SAVE button after just 1 paragraph. And the same thing happened. Again.

Cue steam coming out of my ears, followed by a string of profanity thrown at my computer monitor.

I knew I needed to upgrade WordPress to the latest release, but that shouldn’t have caused the problem. But I went and upgraded manually, which is always scary, and thankfully everything went nice and smooth and you guys never even noticed. Problem solved, right?

Wrong. I just hit SAVE on this very post itself (after copying all the text first just in case), and that same error repeated itself. So I deifnitely have something screwy going on here and need to do some more digging to figure out what’s going on. So my apologies for no new fun and exciting posts. Hopefully I can iron out these kinks a.s.a.p. and return to your regularly scheduled blog.

COUPON TIME:

The Blogging Gift

kivaI’ve been blogging over a year now (eep!) and one of the biggest things I’ve noticed is that as a whole, bloggers are actually pretty nice people. With a few obvious exceptions, most bloggers will help you with any problems you’re having (both technical and emotional), offering whatever advice they can free of charge. And happy to do it too.

But besides freely giving advice, a lot of bloggers seem to be into the whole charity scene too, whether it’s hosting An Act of Kindness contest, blogging 24 hours straight for a real good cause, or making a huge difference in a complete stranger’s life with a small selfless act. I’m seriously impressed by the tremendous amount of selflessness out there in the blogosphere. And I’m happy to say that we’re finally doing a small part ourselves to help other’s in need.

I don’t normally like making these types of posts, but I’m really excited about a new program that Ultimate Coupons founder (and my high school buddy) Jeff just signed us up for. It’s a company called Kiva, and basically they help you “connect with and loan money to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world.” For just a minimum of $25, you can help give a loan to ambitious people around the world who can barely make ends meet, but just need that little help to get started. Through Kiva, you can pick the exact person you want your money to go towards, and they actually show photos, give some background information and even regularly update you on the person’s progress, including how their business is doing and how much of your loan they’ve paid back.

So while you can view this as a charitable donation, it really is a loan that more often than you think is actually paid back. Which you can then use to help someone else out and so on. What I really like about Kiva is, unlike mailing a check into some Breast Cancer Awareness organization where you have no clue where your funds are actually going (and sadly with a lot of charities, many can go right back into funds for mailings asking for more contributions), with Kiva, you see exactly where your money’s going.

We actually have a Lender Page for Ultimate Coupons, where you (and me) can track where we’ve lent our money out, and follow all these great stories. Like Nguyen Thi Lich from Vietnam, a widow with three children who’s trying to raise funds to buy some piglets. Or Sona Oeu from Cambodia, who’s looking to raise money for cloth and a new sewing machine.

These are all real people just trying to get by one day at a time. And reading just a few of their bios helps put everything into perspective. It’s a pretty big world out there, which is sure easy to forget most days as I sit here in my nice comfy home office typing this post on one of my two computers.

Freebie Friday

I’ve decided to start a theme day over here at Everybody Loves Coupons HQ. I mean all the cool blog kids seem to be doing it with their “Wordless Wednesdays” or “Turkey Thursdays” or what have you. And since no day of the week starts with a C, I can’t have a coupon-themed day. (Plus I offer coupons with just about every post so that wouldn’t really be much of a new theme anyways would it?)

So I’ll try to make Fridays a fun day and share some cool freebie offers. Let me know if you like this or not and if you do, I’ll try to actually keep a regular schedule going!
