Before I blink and realize it’s a few days into 2008, I just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year!!! I apologize again for the lack in regular posts on here, but the flurry of coupons/sales/deals during the holiday season goes right on through the end of the year. No I cannot see Mars with these things. Nor have I ever tried burning ants under a hot sun outside with ‘em. And despite appearances, I’ve never even been to a Coca-Cola bottling company. Well, once again, Santa has completely skipped our house. Not even a piece of coal in our stockings. Granted, we didn’t hang any stockings. Nor put up a tree. I’m starting to think maybe it has something to do with the fact that we’re Jewish. You think?

Growing up, I remember spending a lot of Christmas Days going to the movies with my friends (either that or bowling was the only option. Nothing else was open.) and having Chinese food for dinner. Seriously, those were our traditions. Well, this year, we decided to start a new tradition. We were going to join my wife’s two sisters and their families (husbands and kids) at the Great Wolf Lodge in Pennsylvania. That’s 6 adults and 7 kids at an amazing indoor water park.

We planned to leave early Monday morning and spend Christmas Eve there, then leave later the next day. Of course with 7 kids, you know there’s a huge chance something can and will go wrong. So yeah, last Saturday our youngest came down with a really bad stomach bug. But being the trooper that she is, my wife said I should still go and bring our 4 year old with me. “At least 2 of us should be having fun, right?” she said. Good point. So me and the big guy spent Christmas Eve with my brothers- and sisters-in-law and all the nieces and nephews.

Now this place is enormous. I mean like really really enormous. It’s got a great log cabin type of feel to it and is super kid friendly. An arcade, bunch of restaurants, games, crafts and activities are all over. The rooms are fairly nice rooms, decent sized with the wood motif continuing throughout. But the main attraction is the insane indoor waterpark. There’s a few different swimming pool areas (including a great kiddie pool that has 4 different slides, 2 basketball nets and all sorts of water squirters), a huge wave pool, and 4 or 5 giant water slides for kids and adults alike. A few of the enclosed tubes actually go through the walls and outside for a bit, so yeah in the middle of winter you actually feel the temperature drop for a second or two while you’re zipping through on your inner tube. Toss in a zillion other water-related forts, and this place was the mecca of water parks.

So with all that going on, what was my son’s highlight from his little bonding vacation with daddy? “We could play Mario Kart in our room!” Sigh. Yeah, the TV in our room had one of those Nintendo GameCube controllers attached to it. And for $7 an hour, you can play an assortment of games. Yep, playing a game (that we actually own at home) in a hotel room was the highlight of his trip. I guess things could’ve been worse. At least we didn’t have any bathroom accidents.

Today’s flashback to everyone’s favorite decade the ’80s (and yes, by everyone, I mean me) is in honor of a milestone I hit this week. No, it wasn’t my 100th blog post (actually I’m probably coming up on 250 I think) or birthday or anniversary or anything. On Monday morning, actually, it happened. Probably sometime around 9:30 a.m. I’d say. We were driving on the highway in my ol’ 1999 Honda Civic when I looked down and saw it.

Yep, for the first time in my life, I broke the 100,000 miles mark on my odometer. Granted, I would’ve blown past that a few years ago if I wasn’t working from home (where I barely take the car out at all). But with all the cars I’ve had before and my parents’ cars growing up, we never let them break the 100k mark. I think we usually traded them in for a new car around the 80,000 mark or so. I don’t think my dad’s ever had a car for more than 6 or 7 years actually. So this was definitely a first for me. I should probably have a cake or something, right?

Also, tying into the rock scene, my wife and kids came back from the mall yesterday with my belated Chanukah present. Well, belated because it’s been sold out for eons. My 4 year old told me to “Close your eyes, daddy!” So I did. Then when I opened them I saw the most glorious gift ever. Guitar Hero 3 for the XBox360. It took every ounce of strength yesterday to not rip it open and start playing right then and there. Actually, I hadn’t even opened the Xbox 360 itself yet, ’cause I’m waiting till after the holiday insanity was over. But this weekend I am most definitely playing!

Anyways, how can I tie mileage and a video game into this week’s Flashback? Could it be Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” with that funky video game style animation? Nope. Though that is a good one. Instead, think fast cars and even faster guitars. That’s all ya need.

Apparently, yesterday on Oprah she talked about neti pots. No, sorry, despite what you think, I don’t watch Oprah. But a friend of mine passed on the info to me. Now while they may look like small teapots for little Becky’s tea parties (You know how Mr. Flopsie just loooves his tea and biscuits don’t you?), they’re not. If I had one right this second, I would totally give it a shot. I may just order me one anyways, as I have year-round allergies. I get regular allergy shots. I take a bunch of allergy meds (I’ve bounced from clariton to zyrtec to allegra for years). I even tried going to a chiropractor for a year or two to see if that would help. I’m open to just about anything, even acupuncture. So this neti pot thing sounds odd, but I’d be up for giving it a shot if anyone’s had any success. Anyone?
