One of the things I love about having my "office" in the living room is the big picture window right next to my desk. That's because on the other side of that window I have two bird feeders.
The feeder pictured at right is clearly not squirrel-proof. I keep it around anyway, though, because the youngest Cub Scouts in our pack made it for my husband, Mr. Cubmaster. After all, squirrels have to eat, too.
The last time I went to the pet-supply store to stock up on birdseed, I found some small bags of seed specially combined to attract cardinals, finches and other pretty birds. We're pretty heavy on sparrows around here, though the purple finches do make an appearance.
Word has apparently gotten around, because the purple finches are here in force these days, along with blue jays and cardinals. I'd love to see an Eastern goldfinch (they are the state bird) but I guess I'll just have to be thankful to see the ones who are visiting right now. In the past two days, I've spotted cowbirds and a red-winged blackbird. Not to mention the fact that I haven't seen that pesky hawk lately. Instead, the ducks who come around every year at this time have started visiting again, waddling right up to my window and quacking until I come outside and toss bread at them.
