One of my favorite episodes of "I Love Lucy" is the one where Lucy and Ethel unwittingly buy identical dresses for a charity fund-raiser. After they each break their promise to return the dress, they wind up onstage at the fund-raiser, tearing pieces off each other's gowns in a fit of anger.
It's much the same for teenage girls, currently in the midst of Prom Season.
There are Facebook groups galore, set up by high-school girls, for other girls to post photos of their chosen dress. By doing so, they "claim" the right to wear that dress at their prom. And it can get ugly if two (or more) girls stake a claim on the same gown. Shades of Lucy and Ethel, each gallantly offering the other the opportunity to return the dress.
Meanwhile, guys go to the tuxedo-rental shop and rent the exact same tuxedo all their friends will be renting. And no one cares. Except for the one guy in my son's class, who purchased a bright orange tux for his prom.
