There's a reason I don't usually go shopping with my nine-year-old. He's always got ideas about what I should buy, especially when we're shopping for a gift for someone. Not surprisingly, his idea of an appropriate gift doesn't usually agree with mine--or other adults'. Also not surprisingly, his taste in gifts runs to things he wants for himself.
This became particularly clear one day when he ran inside to tell me that his buddy's older brother was planning to get married soon. "We should get him a present," he suggested.
I agreed, then (foolishly) asked Mr. Third Grader what kind of present he thought we should give to the happy couple. "A Beyblade," he decided, perhaps in the hope that his friend's brother would invite him to visit and play.
Somehow I doubt that the bride-to-be has spinning tops on her shower-gift registry.
