I enjoy listening to a satellite-radio program that is hosted by a married couple who are the parents of five children.  They keep it real, which is what keeps it funny.  Sometimes the first half-hour of the program is devoted to things that have happened in their household, which causes them to ask listeners, "What would you do in this situation?"

I knew exactly what to do in the situation they described on the show a couple of weeks ago.  As their older children got their own breakfasts, one of the boys suddenly stopped and stared.  "Dad?  Dad?  Dad?  Um, the toast is on fire..."

I've been there, done that, thrown the toaster out the front door.  And I will say that it has led me to make sure that my kids don't leave the room when they've turned on the stove, as well as to teach them other basic kitchen-safety tips that I might have overlooked.  Fortunately, our only casualty was a toaster (as was the case for my favorite radio-show hosts as well).

Now that I think about it, a fire extinguisher would probably be a good addition to our kitchen, given the amount of toast we go through on any given morning.
