Picture it: you're traveling, staying in a luxury hotel catering to business customers, and when you check out, you're presented with a bill for your hot-water usage.
You'd be shocked at the idea of paying extra for something you'd come to consider "standard equipment."
The same is happening with wireless Internet access in hotels. While you may find that the hotel in which you stay has "free" wireless Internet, but at a fraction of the speed of standard dialup. Want a speedy connection? Be prepared to pony up.
Not only that, but you have to be safety-conscious as well. Almost all hotel wireless runs on unsecured connections, so you have to take extra precautions to ensure that your data is safe. Make sure you have firewall software installed, and don't access sites containing sensitive information (such as your bank account) via an unsecured connection. And make sure you disable file sharing.
Don't think you're getting a "bargain" by connecting to some other available network that you happen to find. Sure, it's free--but who's running that network?
Finally, make sure that when you log in to the hotel network, you're on a secure login page. The web address should start with "https:" which signals a secure connection.
