My teenagers love the look of Converse All-Stars. Suddenly those sneakers that I remember from my childhood, the ones that were tossed aside in favor of running shoes and Reeboks in the '80s, are back in style with the younger crew.
My daughter browses the Converse store and daydreams about color combinations. Right now she's leaning toward yellow, though I've warned her about its potential as a dirt magnet. Meanwhile, my older son just keeps replacing his navy-blue Chucks as they wear out. They've become his signature shoe.
But high-school and college students aren't the only ones sporting Chuck Taylors. The other day, I was standing in line at the supermarket and I noticed that the older gentleman in front of me was wearing Converse shoes as well. He mentioned his age to the cashier: he's 94 years old. I couldn't wait to get home and tell my teens that their fashion statement is being shared by someone 80 years their senior.
