From the Who's Paying for Surveys Like This Department comes this gem: you make better decisions with a full bladder.
That's right: you're more likely to control your impulses when you're simultaneously working to control your bladder, according to a study published by the Association for Psychological Science.
If you've gotta go, you're better able to resist a small temptation now in favor of a larger reward later.
I'm not entirely sure I get how this works. If I've gotta go, I can't think about anything else--so how could I decide between any two alternatives? The researchers believe that it's all about self-control, and if you're exercising self-control in one area, you'll be able to extend that to decision-making.
If that's true, then bookstores, which depend largely on impulse purchases, might want to rethink the whole "café-in-a-bookstore" idea--or expand the size of their restrooms.
