You've heard of Road Rage.  Now there's Sidewalk Rage.  According to researchers, there's even a name for it:  Pedestrian Aggressiveness Disorder.

It's what happens when you run into the supermarket roadblock created by the moms with children hanging off their grocery carts as they plan the next PTA fund-raiser--in the middle of the laundry-detergent aisle.

Or when you're in a hurry as you walk down a crowded city street, only to be held up by the couple strolling along, holding hands and oblivious to the world around them.

Or when you're on a mission in the mall, but you can't manage to find a way to pass the slow walkers in front of you.

I think Road Rage is easier to deal with.  My kids will be the first to rat me out:  I shout at other drivers all the time.  I call them uncomplimentary names.  I wave my arms around.  It's not pretty--but I do all this from the safety of my own minivan.  And I've noticed that I feel a lot more free to do this when I'm on the roads near my own home versus the city streets I must travel on to pick up my son at college.

But what do you do when you're a pedestrian and you run into these roadblocks?   There's not a lot you can do, except grit your teeth and seethe.   The other day at the mall, my older son handled it by loudly saying, "This mall is REALLY crowded today" as we all tried in vain to get between two slow-moving groups.  It beats deliberately bumping into people, getting too close to others, and throwing stuff at whomever's in your way.
