A really good friend is someone who doesn't have to knock before they come through your front door. We have a bunch of those, and they visit every Wednesday night. That's when we host practice sessions for our church's guitar choir. People bring their kids along, and the kids play while the adults rehearse. Of course, there's more socializing than rehearsing, but we get it all done and have a great time in the process. It's a good reason to look forward to Wednesdays.
Because we've been practicing at my house every week for at least the past four years, the "regulars" no longer bother to knock when they arrive around 7 PM. They just open the front door, holler a greeting, and walk right in.
The last time we practiced, though, someone actually knocked. We were expecting a few more people, so everyone in the living room yelled, "Come on in!" No one even bothered going to the front door. But the door opened and a man none of us recognized walked in. He came right into the living room and began talking to my husband.
All the choir members, me included, figured that my husband was expecting this visitor. So we went ahead with tuning our guitars, joking around, and getting ready to practice our music. Suddenly the stranger turned around, looked around the room, and asked, "Where's Debbie?"
Debbie is not a choir member. She's my next-door neighbor. I pointed our confused visitor in the direction of her home, and we all laughed like crazy as the misdirected stranger headed back out the door.
