While smoking sections in restaurants and on airplanes have become a thing of the past in many places, the current trend in travel is to charge extra for non-smoking accommodations.

While some states, such as Wisconsin and Michigan, ban smoking in all hotels, most other states leave it up to the individual establishment to make its own rules.  And some of those, such one Las Vegas resort, actually add a $20 surcharge to guests' bill, indicating that this fee "guarantees" a non-smoking room.  But after the hotel faced some bad press about this policy, they removed that non-smoking charge, replacing it instead with a $20 charge for smokers.

It's just another thing to check on when you make your reservation.  Bottom line:  if you're adamant about staying in a non-smoking room without paying extra for it, choose a hotel that doesn't permit smoking in any guest rooms.
