When you're involved in the school play, creativity is not limited to the acting, singing and dancing that happens onstage. 
The costume committee and prop master also have to employ every bit of ingenuity they can muster to make magic happen during the show.
Two of my kids are involved in the local high school's spring musical: The Wizard of Oz. They're both doubling as Munchkins and Flying Monkeys, but both of them had other aspirations.
They wanted to play Toto.
High-school drama productions are always done on a shoestring budget, and this play is no exception. The Drama Club does not have the funds to hire a trained terrier to play the role of Toto, and the director has been advised against using someone's pet that is unfamiliar with stage work. Upon hearing this news, both my kids eagerly volunteered for the part.
The director informed them, however, that the part of Toto would most likely be played by a "Fur Real Pet." My kids will have to console themselves with their opportunities to dress as Flying Monkeys.
