I grew up listening to traditional Irish folk music, thanks to my dad who's still a big fan of this genre. 
My older son, however, had other ideas. While he enjoys a great variety of music, he prefers rock to other types. But that didn't stop him from finding Irish music he loved. Even with bagpipes.
American bands with Irish roots, like Flogging Molly, the Young Dubliners and the Dropkick Murphys, captured his imagination. These bands have fused traditional Celtic musical elements with modern rock. And their playlists include traditional songs as well as original compositions.
I've enjoyed hearing the new twists on the old songs my dad used to play on the stereo when I was a teenager. For me, it's part of my heritage. For my kids and their friends, it's just amazing, unique music.
Who knew that bands with bagpipes could be so cool?
