My daughter and her friends went to the Winter Formal at their school one recent weekend.

They looked great; a hairdresser fixed their curls perfectly, and they were all proud of their fancy dresses.  They had high-heeled shoes and shiny nail polish.  All three girls looked their very best for the occasion--right out of "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Until you noticed the jewelry.

My daughter (on the right) accessorized her formal dress with a plastic bracelet that looked like something she could have gotten out of a gumball machine.  I know she has nicer jewelry than that.  But this is what she chose to wear.

I guess I should just consider myself lucky that she didn't sport her usual bracelet collection:  rubber bracelets advertising various causes and school events, and an assortment of spare hair elastics.
