A trip down a local highway after a recent snowstorm got me thinking about what some drivers apparently don't think about: their windshields.
If you don't notice your windshield, that's a good thing. That means it's not dirty, covered with something, or broken.
Back to that drive down Route 130: I observed another driver tailgating a salt truck. It seems he didn't care that his windshield was being pelted by chunks of rock salt. The microscopic crack that may result will probably go unnoticed until the summer, when the heat inside the car makes it bloom into a long line across the entire windshield. That's a high price to pay because he couldn't be bothered to stay back 150 feet.
We've had an awful lot of windshields replaced around here. I remember the time my husband took the kids to the park. We only had two kids back then, and our daughter was two or three. The local park has a gravel parking lot. When it was time to leave the park, our daughter didn't want to go home--she was having too much fun. He took her by the hand, ignoring the tantrum in progress. Once they got to the car, she picked up a stone from the parking lot. That stone was on its way to the windshield before he could stop her.
He lifted her up so she could see the broken windshield on our station wagon. "Pretty!" she declared.
"Not pretty," he answered. "Not pretty!"
