My eight-year-old son is deep into that phase that moms of boys everywhere love to hate: bath avoidance.
It's not that he's afraid of water. He likes water just fine. He's happy to play basketball in the rain, and in the summertime, he likes nothing more than swimming like a fish in our backyard pool.
I'm guessing that it's not so much the water in the tub as it is the soap. I buy the "gentle stuff" for kids. I let him choose whether he wants vanilla, watermelon, mint or green apple. But when bedtime approaches and I tell him that it's time for a shower, he acts like I want to suspend him from the shower-curtain rod by his toenails and scrub him down with icy water and a Brillo pad. He spends more time arguing with me about his need to take a shower ("I already had a shower this week!") than he does actually taking the shower. Claims that he's trying to "go green," taking fewer showers to save water, are futile. But he tries to avoid showers at all costs.
In his mind, cleanliness is next to girliness.
