Meteorologists belong to a profession that people love to hate.  They get blamed for "guessing" wrong when the weather does not pan out as predicted.  For that matter, they get blamed for bad weather, even though all they do is observe and predict based on past history.  They have absolutely no power to make a sunny/rainy/snowy/windy day happen.

They might grumble about Groundhog Day and how it's unscientific--but if I were a meteorologist (instead of just being married to one) I'd appreciate the fact that Punxsutawney Phil takes the pressure off, at least for six weeks of the year.  After all, starting this morning at sunrise, the whole country is watching for Phil's prediction.  No one cares what The Weather Channel has to say.  No one's listening to the National Weather Service.  It's all Phil, and people believe him in a way they don't believe a professional meteorologist.  So for the entire month of February and the first 3 weeks of March, meteorologists have their very own scape-rodent.
