I mentioned back on Monday that this is "Just Say No to Powerpoint Week." I had no idea that there was such a week, but then again, that's what Weird Holiday Mondays are all about.

I'm the only person in this house whose age is in the double digits that does not know how to use Powerpoint.  I'm all over Outlook, Word and OneNote, and I can even make a (very) rudimentary spreadsheet on Excel, as long as you don't ask me to do any math stuff.  But it's not like I've been required to do any presentations anytime recently.  The last time I taught kids older than 8 on a full-time basis was over twenty years ago.

Normally, my inability to use Powerpoint doesn't handicap me in any way.  Homemakers, freelance writers, school-library volunteers and wives of Cubmasters don't ordinarily get asked to make presentations.  But when I'm asked to substitute-teach at my son's school, that lack of Powerpoint skills becomes a problem.  The librarian/computer teacher has kids as young as 10 creating presentations with sound, animation and fabulous graphics.

Last time I subbed for the librarian, the fifth-graders were working on their very first Powerpoints.  And all I could do was check their spelling; I had no clue how to do anything else.  So when she asked me if I was available to sub for her on this coming Tuesday, the first thing I said after checking my calendar was, "Please don't give the fifth grade a Powerpoint assignment!"
