My daughter's high school is preparing for this spring's musical. They'll be performing The Wizard of Oz. Miss Freshman
will be participating, and is waiting to hear if she'll be cast as one of the Witch's Guard or as a Flying Monkey (her desired role).
My older son took part in the spring musicals for all four of his years in high school, as a member of the stage crew. All four years, I never knew what was going on. I never received a schedule, email, or phone call detailing rehearsals and responsibilities.
The same people are running the play this year, but I've already gotten several emails and attended one meeting. I've got the feeling that once again, the difference between boys and girls boils down to communication. My older son was not interested in attending information meetings. He just wanted to build and paint sets and work the light board. So he avoided all announcements and schedules and depended on his friends to tell him when the stage crew would be working on sets.
My daughter, on the other hand, brought home permission slips and urged me to attend the parent meeting. She asked if I'd be involved in cooking the Tech Week dinners, where the performers' parents get together and feed the 95 actors plus all the crew members every night during that time of intensive rehearsals. She showed me the schedule.
Same school, same director, different kid. So far, rehearsal nights have gone a lot more smoothly, because the element of surprise is gone. The only uncertainty at this point is whether my daughter will be a Flying Monkey, wearing Heelys™ on the stage.
