Want to drive my mom nuts? It's really simple to do.
Just leave your window treatments opened unevenly.
I first noticed this quirk of hers when she started teaching. The shades in her classroom, which faced the sunny side of the building, always had to be uniform in length. Most middle-school-age kids can't accomplish this, and don't even notice if the shades are uneven. All they care about is whether the sun is in their eyes. But Mom couldn't go on with the lesson until the shades were properly aligned.
She's the same way at home, and this little habit has rubbed off on me. I guess it comes from listening to her rant, every time we drove past a school where the window shades weren't pulled down evenly in each room. It's not too bad in the winter, because we often keep the shades and curtains closed to keep out the drafts. But in warmer weather, when curtains are open and so are the windows, I'll compulsively go around opening all the windows in a room to exactly the same level. If they're uneven, they just don't look right to me. Thanks, Mom!
