If you're walking down hallways in the dark, sometimes things will pop out of nowhere and trip you. Even if you're not starring in a horror movie. 
I had to learn this the hard way. More accurately, I had to learn this the stupid way. Some of the Cub Scouts were working on a music merit badge, and the Scout leader had asked me to find out if they could have access to the piano in the community center so they could schedule a short recital to display what they'd learned. The piano was locked, and the business manager of the center handed me a "mystery key" so I could test it and see if it would open up the piano.
I spend a few hours a week in that community center, and by this point, I figured I knew my way down the L-shaped hallway well enough that I didn't need to turn on the lights. A bit of daylight here and there through the meeting-room windows should be enough for me to see my way down to Room 9, where the piano is stored.
I'd left my cell phone in my car, carrying only my keys (which include keys to the meeting rooms) and the mystery key into the building. In the middle of the day, no one's in that building. And there I was, running down the hallway and turning the corner, where it suddenly became very dark, and I tripped over an empty rack that's used for storing folding tables or chairs.
My ankle bent in a direction in which ankles don't ordinarily go. But I was alone in there, in the dark, in the middle of the day, with no way to call for anyone. So I got to my feet and limped into the meeting room, where I discovered that the mystery key did not, indeed, open the lock on the piano.
I had to go back to the business office, where the staff had found three more keys (all different) for me to try. On this trip into the community center, I made sure to turn the lights on. Luckily, one of those keys worked.
