It used to be all I could do to get my kids to wear a hat in the winter. Even if I went all-out with team-logo hats for the boys or cute
hats that matched the winter jacket for my daughter, a hat was the last thing everyone wanted to wear.
Suddenly, winter hats became fashionable. Now I can hardly get the kids to take them off. What's the difference?
Now they're wearing those Peruvian "Chullo" hats--indoors (when they can get away with it) and out.
Along with these colorful hats (which come complete with the ear flaps that, when I was a teenager, would have been considered hopelessly dorky) the kids wear fingerless "hobo" gloves. I've even seen these marketed specifically to teens, with labels touting their "touch-screen-friendly" design.
So you'd think that I'd be all set now that my kids are wearing hats and gloves when the weather turns the least bit cold. You'd think that--until you see them heading out the door in the mornings. Sure, they've got hats and gloves. But none of them wants anything to do with putting on a jacket.
