It's been a long time since I had a good camera.
Before cameras went digital, I used a very nice SLR camera.
While it had automatic settings, I took a photography class at a local community center and learned all about how to set that camera manually. There was plenty of picture-taking when my older two kids were little.
My first digital camera was a compact SLR model. Not much was manual, but by that time I was a little busier and, by then, happy to let the camera take some of the load off. "Point and shoot" was the way of least resistance and I got good results, even though I slacked off on taking photos as the kids got older--even after we added child #3 to the family. But that camera bit the dust this spring, and the pocket-size digicam I bought to replace it isn't worth the space it takes up in my pocket. I was happy when I received a snazzy new digital SLR for Christmas.
My Big Kids were happy too. Now that they're both teenagers, they know I'll let them (carefully) use my camera. They take pictures of things I wouldn't think to photograph. Sometimes that yields strange results, but it's interesting to see the world through their eyes. Except, of course, when that results in an unflattering photo of me. Fortunately, the memory card is mine and I know how to delete the bad shots!
