The spring musical at my daughter's high school this year is "The Wizard of Oz." That's going to be a fun play!
For the first time, I have a child involved in the play as an actor instead of a crew member. It's easy when your kid's in stage crew. Before the play, you make sure that they wear the jeans, shirt and shoes that they've already ruined by painting sets for the last play. During the play, you make sure that they've got an all-black outfit to wear while they move scenery around.
But my daughter is one of the 95 students who have a role in this play. She doesn't have a speaking part, but she will be part of the ensemble, possibly as a citizen of Emerald City or even a Flying Monkey--that's the part she really wants. As she's 5'6" tall, her chances of playing a Munchkin are pretty slim.
Not only do the Costume Moms have the challenge of outfitting nearly a hundred young performers, but they'll have to take care of some challenging makeup. I wonder how they'll manage to make someone who's still struggling with "teenage skin" look like the Wicked Witch of the West.
