Back in the '70s when I was in middle school, everyone considered it the epitome of cool to carry a large, brightly-colored plastic comb in their back pockets.
I think it's about time that Mr. Third Grader becomes a trendsetter and resurrects that retro fad. Carrying the comb, that is--not the "feathered-back" hair that was all the rage. I don't think he could carry off that look.
But he definitely needs to improve his use of a comb. His barber, on one occasion, asked him if he knew how to use a comb. (Answer: yes, he knows how--he just chooses not to do it.)
With the winter weather we've been having, Mr. Third Grader has been wearing his winter hat every day. I've seen what his hair looks like after he's spent any time at all wearing a hat, and I kind of feel sorry for his teacher, having to look at him all day when he looks like that.
At the same time, I have to wonder: if an 8-year-old boy is going to wear a hat to school anyway, is there any point in trying to hold him down long enough in the morning to neatly comb his hair?
I'd love for him to cultivate the ultimate '70s cool look and get a big old hot-pink comb for his back pocket.
