Now that it's winter, it's time for winter track. This is a sport that is played indoors, but participants practice outdoors. After school. 
When you start running at 3:00 in the afternoon in December, there's a good shot that it's going to be dark out before you're finished. So I advise my daughter, who runs track, to make sure that she's wearing some brightly-colored clothing so she can be seen. Neon-green or traffic-cone orange would work, I think.
I reminded her of this last night when we were driving home and there was a teenager running on the side of the road (ignoring the sidewalks) who was nearly invisible. Dark pants and a gray shirt are not the way to dress when you run after sunset.
"Did you hit him?" wondered Mr. Third Grader.
"No, I didn't!" I told him. "If I had, you would have felt the thump."
