If you (or your child) received a new iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad this Christmas, you may be in for a rude awakening once your credit-card bill comes.  It's a fairly well-kept secret that some apps for these and other devices contain options for in-app purchases--ones that must be made with real money.  These purchases are simple to make, often not requiring a password at all, so if you had your iPhone to your four-year-old so he can play Smurfs' Village, he can drop $60 on a bucket of Smurfberries with a single click.

The majority of the top ten "free" iPhone apps in December allow such in-app purchases, so it definitely pays to be aware of the games you and your children are buying.  You can also disable in-app purchases for your device.

Bait and switch?  It certainly feels like it.  I found an interesting free cooking app the other day that I wanted to download, but after reading the online reviews, I discovered that it only comes with 10 recipes.  More are available--for a price.  I'll skip it.
