Mr. Third Grader is very excited to go to school these days, since his class has a new pet:  a gecko.  It doesn't talk, like the one in the Geico insurance commercials, but it's still very cute.  The kids are always excited when the gecko comes out of its hiding place to eat or even just view the classroom from the safety of its habitat.

Having a class pet is always a risky venture.  I remember my first venture into substitute teaching.  I was a college student majoring in education at the time, and my uncle arranged a day or two of subbing at the school where he worked.  In the morning, I stopped into the classroom for only a moment before heading to the door where the third-graders were lined up and waiting to come in.

The kids got busy with putting away lunchboxes and settling down at desks to begin the day.  The ones who had classroom jobs to do began to do their work.  That's when the pandemonium started.  There was a fish tank in the classroom--right in the front of the room--and the students assigned to feed the fish that week found that one of the fish was belly up at the top of the tank.

So much for an orderly beginning to my very first day running a classroom all by myself.

Just as my uncle was strolling by my classroom, the kids began shrieking as the grim discovery was made.  "The fish died!  The fish died!" they called out.  Immediately, every boy in the classroom was out of his seat.

"Can I flush it?"
